My approach to therapy is a strong client-centered foundation combined with evidence-based modalities including CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). The very first thing you can expect from me as your therapist is to truly see and acknowledge you exactly as you are. Problem solving, challenging thought patterns, and working towards positive change are important components of therapy. It is my belief that the first step towards shifting into those actions is for me to meet you where you are and honor you by holding space for your experiences, perceptions, and emotions before we shift into "problem solving mode".
CBT focuses on the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Maladaptive behaviors are often driven by unhelpful thought patterns that stem from the core beliefs we have about ourselves and the world. As your therapist, I'll collaborate with you to start identifying and challenging these thoughts to reduce your distress and create a domino effect of more positive emotions and behaviors. One thing I will never do as your therapist is encourage toxic positivity; oftentimes, reality is still disappointing in some ways, but the aim of CBT is to help you to recognize and begin challenging the thoughts that are not fully true and are amplifying your unhappiness and unhelpful behaviors.
ACT is a compassionate, empowering approach that helps you to build a healthier relationship with your thoughts and emotions while moving forward to the life you want to live. Rather than attempting to reject or distract from uncomfortable thoughts and emotions, ACT teaches you how to respond to them in a way that puts you back in the driver's seat of your reactions. With ACT, we'll work together to begin gently noticing your thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them, respond to challenges with greater flexibility and self-compassion, and take meaningful, values-based steps forward, even when things feel difficult.
At this time, my practice is solely Telehealth based. However, I anticipate transitioning to a brick-and-mortar office space by the summer of 2026. At that point, you'll have the option to begin seeing me in person or continue utilizing Telehealth. Many of my clients choose to switch back and forth between Telehealth and in person appointments based on their scheduling needs, and I am happy to accommodate that!
My therapeutic approach is heavily rooted in insight-oriented talk therapy. Most younger children are not yet capable of fully engaging in this type of approach, and find it difficult to articulate the very real and valid thoughts and emotions that are driving their behaviors. For younger children, I would typically refer out to a play therapist, art therapist, or OT services. Although uncommon, it is certainly possible that some younger children are entirely capable of engaging in talk therapy, and if you feel that your child would benefit from this type of therapy, I encourage you to reach out to me to schedule a consultation.
My practice is self-pay. This allows therapy to remain flexible, private, and focused on your individual needs. If you have mental health benefits, you may be able to seek partial reimbursement from your insurance provider. I can provide a detailed receipt for therapy services that you can submit to your insurance company to request reimbursement.
